Meu pai, a cachaça e o resto

Meu pai gosta demais de ovo frito. Mas muito mesmo. Minha mãe tem que fazer pra ele quase todo dia. Mas ela conta que de vez em quando ele diz que que comer “uma coisa diferente”. Mas o quê, mãe?, pergunto, dos mais interessados. Quase engasgando de rir, ela responde: “Dois ovo!” Minha mãe não inventou isso, em juro. É a mais pura verdade. Como é verdade que ela fala “dois ovo” quando conta isso é eu não sou autor suficiente pra mudar a história.

Semanas atrás, ele pegou COVID. Um sofrimento pra todos nós. Pra ele também. Sequela: memória foi e voltou devagarinho. Outra: café. Não conseguiu tomar ainda. E olha que café lá em casa – casa de pai e mãe é sempre casa da gente – é cedo, de tarde e de noite, e mais um na hora de dormir, senão o sono não vem logo. Minha mãe não abre mão – né, dona Cotinha! Detalhe: o café não desce, mas de cachaça ele não teve sequela nenhuma. Como diz a dona da casa: “Elson, Elson…”

Cachaça. Meu pai é do tempo em que cerveja era luxo. Morava em São Miguel do Passa Quatro, poucas casas, pouca gente e muita roça. O ‘leite’ da vadiagem era cachaça. Daí que sempre cultivou o gosto, que, diga-se, herdou do pai e passou pro filho: eu. Parou de beber quando o namoro com minha mãe enlerou. Meu avô falou: ou para, ou não casa. Casou. Minha mãe nunca deixou de vigiar. Mas vai lá em casa, entra na biblioteca dele. Mais fácil não ter livro do que cachaça.

Lembro quando ele passou no vestibular. A gente morava em Vianópolis. Ele tinha 32 anos, dois filhos, o Waber e eu. Passou em Uberlândia. Começou a estudar em fevereiro seguinte. Em abril, nasceu minha única irmã, Vanusa. Naquele tempo, não havia asfalto à vista. No máximo, bloquetes nas ruas da cidade, se bem me lembro. Ir pra Uberlândia era uma aventura: ia até Pires do Rio, Catalão, e depois, Minas. Tudo estrada de chão. Ele ia de dois em dois meses, ficava uma semana, sabendo que teria de fazer recuperação por falta. Durante muito tempo foi o único advogado de Vianópolis.

Foi em Uberlândia, aliás, que vi meu primeiro filme no cinema: ‘Os Trapalhões nas Minas do Rei Salomão’. Um estouro. Cinema abaixo, quando a cachorrinha… não vou dar espoiler. Não dá pra esquecer. Não esqueço também quando comecei a dirigir e, na estrada pra Passa Quatro, hoje asfaltada, de repente me vi diante de uma boiada e travei. O carro morreu, mas eu sobrevivi porque ele teve paciência suficiente pra não me tomar o volante. Me fez ligar de novo o carro e seguir em frente. Venci o desafio. Venci na vida.

Uma coisa que é marcante pra mim: quando meu pai perdeu uma eleição em Passa Quatro, onde foi o primeiro prefeito, em vez de guardar raiva e amargura dos amigos e velhos companheiros, que tinham ficado contra ele, simplesmente escreveu seu primeiro livro, criando beleza, e se reconciliando com suas raizes. Contou a história da criação da cidade, os fatos de todo mundo. Em seguida, contou causos de sua infância, em ‘O Sino da Igreja’. E não parou mais. Já escreveu 18 livros e tem mais uns quatro ou cinco na capanga, só esperando a hora. Ele se superou, eu digo. Ele é insuperável!

Essa eu já contei mas vou contar de novo porque sempre me alegra, tipo sair na chuva em época de jabuticabas. Quando eu era bem pequeno, a gente morando em Vianópolis, corria dele ir pra Passa Quatro, e eu pegar junto, pra ele fazer o Imposto de Renda do pessoal de lá, o povo do distrito e redondezas que chamava ele de doutor Erso. Ele ficava na casa dos pais dele, meus avós. Era uma casa gostosa, principalmente porque tinha minha vó Maria, meus tios e tinha acima de tudo meu avô Bastião, que era padeiro e fazia um pudim, mas um pudim, que ninguém nunca mais deu conta de fazer igual ou parecido. Até hoje.

Meu pai ficava num quarto no quintal, emendado na casa, mas fora. Lá sempre tinha muita gente. E o Imposto de Renda virava cantoria sem mais nem menos. Porque meu pai toca violão, é compositor e canta que é uma maravilha até hoje. Faz uma primeira suave, limpinha. Eu a vida inteira fui desafinado. Meu sonho: saber cantar. Rezei muito. Rezei o que sei conta. Preferiria saber cantar a qualquer outra habilidade ou dom. Minha frustração. Minha, porque meu pai nunca deu um pio sobre isso. Me aceitou desde que nasci, assim: ‘disritmado’, como dizia minha vó Izídia. Só que deu um fruto: não vivo sem modão. Moda de viola embala meu coração.

Um dos maiores elogios que recebi na vida foi quando um amigo me viu sair andando acelerado na frente dele – feito um Zequinha Calixto, o pai da minha mãe que vivia sorrindo de tudo, mesmo quando teve câncer no pulmão – e falou: rapaz, você tá andando igualzinho seu pai: torto, um ombro pra cima, outro pra baixo. Eu ri bonito. Ri sem tanto. Meu pai me faz rir das tristezas. A gente vai levando a vida é a vida nos levando. Ainda não tenho os cabelos tão brancos feito ele. Mas tô no caminho. Eu vou devagar. Saí do meu pai e é nele, imagem e semelhança, que quero chegar. Sem tirar nem pôr. Se Deus quiser, com muita cachaça e biblioteca pra contar.
